De Kalb is a town in and the county seat of Kemper County, Mississippi, United States. [3] The population was 1,164 at the 2010 census. [4] De Kalb is named after General Johann de Kalb, a Franconian-French military officer who served as a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.
DeKalb Motor Company, owned by Mr. Enos Prince, was located where the Baptist Fellowship Hall now stands. This building served as the first National Guard Armory in Kemper County. The building was torn down in the early 1960's.

Kemper County emerged in the 1830s as a rapidly growing part of eastern Mississippi. In the 1840 census, the county reported 4,623 free people and 3,040 slaves; twenty years later the county’s population neared twelve thousand and was about half free and half slave.
