Naval Support Activity Danang or NSA Danang was a United States Navy logistics support organization located in Danang, South Vietnam active from October 1965 to April 1972.
The PTFs, under Vietnamese officers and crews, conducted over 1,000 raids against North Vietnam from March-April 1964 to January 1972. Because of Da Nang’s strategic location on rail, air, and highway routes, development of its facilities into a large deepwater port was essential.
DaNang was where the first combat troops landed in Vietnam on March 8, 1965. This is significant to our organization because the landing was followed by other events that would soon establish the U.S. Naval Support Activity (NSA) at DaNang.
NSA/NSF DaNang Veterans Association. Our members include Vietnam veterans who served with the U.S. Naval Support Activity DaNang (1965-1970) and the U.S. Naval Support Facility DaNang (1970-1972).
The I Corps Tactical Zone was the location for operations of NSA/NSF DaNang. I Corp began at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in the north, and included the five northern provinces of South Vietnam that including: Quang Tri Province, Thura Thien-Hue Province (also called Thua Thien), Quang Nam Province, Quang Tin Province, and Quang Ngai Province.
The attacks on Da Nang (29 January – 11 February 1968), were a series of attacks in the Tet Offensive launched by the North Vietnamese People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN) and the Viet Cong (VC) during the Vietnam War.
At the Naval Support Activity (NSA), DaNang, some 9,500 Navy men worked around the clock receiving, storing, and transporting the thousands of tons of material required to support the U. S. and Free World Military Assistance Forces in the I Corps Tactical Zone—the five northern provinces of South Vietnam.
