How to compensate for magnetic declination when reading a compass. In this example, the declination is 14°E (+14°), so the compass card points to a "north" 14 degrees to the East of true North. To obtain a true bearing, add 14 degrees to the bearing shown by the compass.
A compass lines up with the horizontal component of the magnetic field in a direction called magnetic north. True north, on the other hand is the direction from a given location to the north geographic pole. The angle between magnetic north and true north is called magnetic declination.
Declination results are typically accurate to 30 minutes of arc, but environmental factors can cause magnetic field disturbances. The calculator provides an easy way for you to get results in HTML, XML, CSV, or JSON programmatically (API). Registration is required to access this service.
26 maj 2024 · Our calculator will help you find the magnetic declination for your specific location and date. A positive declination (+D) means that your compass will point east of north. A negative declination (-D) means that your compass will point west of north.
Setting the Declination on Your Compass. Brunton and Suunto, two of the biggest navigation brands, differ in the way declination is adjusted on most of their compass models. The steps presented below for each brand are for a magnetic declination of 15.6° West.
