15 lut 2022 · What Is Coccidia in Cats? Coccidia are single-celled (protozoan) parasites that nearly all cats are exposed to in their lifetime. The parasite travels into the intestinal lining cells of the cat, where it matures over about two weeks into oocysts, rupturing the cells and causing intestinal damage.
The most common coccidia of cats and dogs are Isospora spp. Two species infect cats: I felis and I rivolta; both can be identified easily by oocyst size and shape. Four species infect dogs: I burrowsi, I canis, I neorivolta, and I ohioensis.
The majority of adult cats are immune to the infectious disease that coccidia can cause, called “coccidiosis”. Kittens under six months of age and cats suffering from conditions that hinder their immune system may contract coccidiosis.
