The American Civil War began on April 12, 1861, in Charleston, South Carolina. Confederate troops captured Fort Sumter from the Union. Afterward both sides quickly raised armies. The first major battle of the war was fought on July 21. About 30,000 Union troops marched toward the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia.
Civil War Leaders The Civil War was often called the “Brother’s War” because it pitted states, towns, villages, and even families against each other. For example, Abraham Lincoln’s wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, had three brothers who fought for the Confederacy and were killed.
The struggle between these two combatants is generally known as the American Civil War, though it is also referred to as the War Between the States or the War of the Rebellion. The war aims of both sides were simple. At the beginning the North fought only to preserve the Union.
