Williamsburg County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census its population was 31,026. [1] The county seat and largest community is Kingstree. [2] After a previous incarnation of Williamsburg County, the current county was created in 1804. [3]
Williamsburg County, located in the southern tip of the Pee Dee, holds treasures of historical interest dating back to the early 1700’s. In 1730, Governor Robert Johnson proposed a "Township Plan," marking the beginning of Williamsburg County.
Williamsburg, named after William of Orange, was one of eleven townships ordered by King George II in 1730 meant to develop the "back country" of the Carolina Province. The township was a part of Craven County, one of the original four counties that encompassed present South Carolina.
