History. Settled in 1854, Pawnee quickly became a bustling community. Home of the largest coal mine in the world (Peabody #10) and forming its own Railroad Line, the Village established itself as a thriving community. The closing of the coal mine in the mid 1990’s didn’t deter families from moving to Pawnee.
