The GED®. The HiSET® and GED® are both high school equivalency exams. Keep in mind, you are not earning “your GED®.” You are earning a “high school equivalency certificate” and only a state or tribal education agency can grant a high school equivalency certificate.
Since 1942 the GED® was the ONLY test that lead to a High School Equivalency Certificate. The CA State Board of Education has TWO exams, which are the HiSET® and the GED®. LAUSD now offers the HiSET ® (High School Equivalency Test).
In the Spring of 2014, the California Department of Education approved two new alternate HSE exams for test-takers in California. There are now three HSE exams to choose from including HiSET, TASC, and GED. The alternate HSE tests are available in both paper/pencil and computer-based formats. The GED exam is offered in computer format only.
