The book of Genesis is the first book of the Bible. It is divided into two main parts, with chapters 1-11 telling the story of God and the whole world, and chapters 12-50 focusing in on the story of God, a man, and his family.
Genesis is an account of the creation of the world, the early history of humanity, and the origins of the Jewish people. [2] Genesis is part of the Torah or Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible. Tradition credits Moses as the Torah's author.
Most importantly, Genesis recounts the origin of the family of God. The book describes how God established His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The covenant relationship forms the backbone of the rest of the Bible. God binds Himself to humanity and promises to undo the harmful effects of sin.
The book of Genesis gives us our historical point of reference, from which all subsequent revelation proceeds. In this book we find the “roots” of the inhabited world and the universe, of man and nations, of sin and redemption.
Genesis revealed to them the eternal promises God made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—promises which extended to their descendants. It provided comfort and hope for the downtrodden Hebrews as they waited to return to their “promised land.”
Genesis (from a Greek word, meaning “origins” or “beginnings”) is a book about beginnings: the beginning of the world, the beginning of sin, a new beginning after the flood, the beginning of nations, and the beginning of Israel. Ultimately, it is about the beginning of God’s plan of redemption.
