8 cze 2022 · All birds have three eyelids. Two of these are external, an upper and a lower lid, of which the lower one is more moveable than the upper one. Birds, as well as reptiles and some mammal species, are equipped with a so-called “third eyelid”, also known as a nictitating membrane.
The nictitating membrane (from Latin nictare, to blink) is a transparent or translucent third eyelid present in some animals that can be drawn across the eye from the medial canthus to protect and moisten it while maintaining vision.
