At the center, the narrow 53-mile-wide Bering Strait is the only waterway connecting the Pacific and Arctic oceans. Major currents and sea ice fuel extremely high plankton and sea floor productivity which attracts more than 10 million nesting seabirds such as Least and Parakeet Auklets, as well as the global population of wintering Spectacled ...

22 mar 2021 · Here we synthesize data available from limited (and often old) literature concerning the diversity and origins of terrestrial fauna (mammals, birds, freshwater fish, non-parasitic and parasitic invertebrates) occurring across Bering Sea islands.
29 sty 2024 · The diverse avian community near Bering Island showcases a remarkable adaptation and survival in a challenging environment. From the majestic sea eagles to the diminutive but resilient songbirds, each species contributes uniquely to the ecological tapestry of the region.
25 lip 2018 · Bering Island Was a Giant, Extinct Seabird’s Last Stand. New fossils show that the Spectacled Cormorant, an enormous bird once native to Japan, had a much wider range than anyone thought. By Jake Buehler. Published July 25, 2018.
Bering Sea. Received 31 July 2001, accepted 15 April 2002. Isolated in the northcentral Bering Sea at 600 24' N, 1720 42' W, St. Matthew Island and its small nearby satellites, Hall Island and Pin-nacle Rock, occupy a central geographic po-sition relative to the breeding ranges and sea-sonal movements of the different bird faunas
The effects move up the food chain, reducing the populations of zooplankton, particularly euphausiids (closely related to the krill found in Antarctic waters). Birds accustomed to gorging on euphausiids, notably shearwaters, starved to death in enormous numbers.
Sitting Ducks: Why Millions of Arctic Seabirds Are in Danger. Oil spills, climate change, fishing, shipping routes—threats facing Arctic seabirds are vast, and hard to track. The entire world population of Spectacled Eiders breeds in the Bering Sea. Photo: Aaron Lang/USFWS.
