According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of 79.15 square miles (205.0 km 2), of which 76.95 square miles (199.3 km 2) are land and 2.2 square miles (5.7 km 2) (2.81%) are covered by water.

In the late 1940s, Baton Rouge and East Baton Rouge Parish became a consolidated city/parish with a mayor/president leading the government.
