The Northrop YB-49 was a jet-powered flying wing prototype bomber developed by Northrop Corporation after World War II. It was a turbojet version of the piston-engined Northrop XB-35 and YB-35, but never entered production due to the B-36 and B-47.

The B-49 was a flying wing design that could not overcome stability problems and was canceled by the Air Force in 1949. It was also considered as a spy plane for its high altitude and speed, but never flew in that role.
On March 15, 1950, an Air Force crew was testing the aircraft stabilizer response during a high speed taxi run when the nose wheel began a violent shimmy. Before the aircraft could be brought under control, the nose landing gear collapsed and the No. 1 YB-49 broke in two and was destroyed.

21 paź 2024 · The YB-49 was escorted by a Lockheed P-80A Shooting Star and a Northrop P-61 Black Widow as it climbed to 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) en route to Muroc. Over Lancaster, California, the P-61 caught fire and was abandoned by its crew.
