Robert Arthur Young (17 December 1863 – 3 April 1948) was a Scottish American. He was one of the founders of Ernst & Young, the international accounting firm.
The firm was formed in 1989 when the third largest accounting firm at the time, Ernst & Whinney (based in Cleveland, Ohio), merged with the sixth largest firm, Arthur Young (headquartered in New York), forming what, at the time, was the world's largest accounting firm.
In 1906, Arthur Young & Co. was set up by a Scottish accountant, Arthur Young, in Chicago. Starting in 1924, these two American firms became allied with prominent British firms; Young with Broads Paterson & Co.; and Ernst with the aforementioned Whinney Smith & Whinney.

10 wrz 2024 · In 1989 Ernst & Whinney was the 4th largest accounting firm in the entire world. When the firm merged with the fifth largest firm, Arthur Young, it became Ernst & Young, and later decided to rebrand and operate as EY. Today EY has over 270,000 employees worldwide and revenue exceeding $34B dollars.
The sixth and seventh firms, Lybrand, Ross Bros. & Montgomery and Arthur Young & Co., reported billings of more than $25 million; while the smallest firm, Touche, Ross, Bailey & Smart (formerly Touche, Niven, Bailey & Smart), had estimated billings of $17 million [Wise, 1960].
The Big Eight consisted of Arthur Andersen, Arthur Young, Coopers & Lybrand, Deloitte Haskins and Sells, Ernst & Whinney, Peat Marwick Mitchell, Price Waterhouse, and Touche Ross.
