The vice chief of staff of the Army (VCSA) is the principal deputy to the chief of staff of the Army, and is the second-highest-ranking officer on active duty in the Department of the Army.
James J. Mingus (born 1964) is a United States Army general who has served as the vice chief of staff of the Army since January 5, 2024. He most recently served as the director of the Joint Staff from 2022 to 2024.
He most recently served as the 38th vice chief of staff of the United States Army from August 2022 to September 2023, and previously served as the senior military assistant to the United States Secretary of Defense.
