The arcuate veins describe an arch around the base of the renal pyramids, show several anastomoses, and receive cortical and medullary tributaries. The interlobular veins have rootlets in the periphery of the renal cortex and constitute veins that run parallel to the surface of the kidney.
The renal arteries arise directly from the aorta, and the renal veins drain directly into the inferior vena cava. Kidney function is derived from the actions of about 1.3 million nephrons per kidney; these are the “functional units.”
