Norms. VO 2max is a measure of a person's aerobic fitness (see more on Measuring VO 2max). The table below categorizes VO 2max scores for adult men and women of various ages. These are relative VO 2max scores, in the units of mls of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml.kg -1.min -1).

Absolute- Liters per minute (L•min-1) Used to convert consumption to a rate of energy expenditure. Relative- ml per kg body weight per min (ml•kg-1•min-1) Used to compare VO. 2 among varying body sizes. Gross- Total consumption rate under any circumstances, either in absolute or relative.
Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess the indirect calculation of VO 2 max using ACSM’s equation for Bruce protocol in athletes of different sports and to compare with the directly measured; secondly to develop regression models predicting VO 2 max in athletes.
The ACSM publishes percentile rankings of estimated VO 2 max in five percent increments from the third through the eight decade of life 1. These rankings allow for comparison between individuals over several decades.
The maximal exercise tests (ACSM max) exhibited the highest overestimation, with an average of 9.8 mL O 2 /kg∙min −1. Furthermore, the submaximal methods also significantly overestimated VO 2 max, with 6.4 (ACSM submax,Fox ) and 6.0 mL O 2 /kg∙min −1 (ACSM submax,measured ) on average.
