25 maj 2023 · Despite continuous efforts, the educational achievement gap is still, in most societies, a significant obstacle to ensuring more equity and social justice. Much of this inequality derives from belonging to historically discriminated groups.
The term “achievement gap” has a negative and racialized history, and using the term reinforces a deficit mindset that is ingrained in U.S. educational systems. In this essay, we review the literature that demonstrates why “achievement gap” reflects deficit thinking.

3 kwi 2024 · NCES explored the achievement gaps between Black and White, and Hispanic and White, students using NAEP data to illuminate patterns and changes in these gaps over time, and identify factors that might underlie such gaps.
As intended, the findings may contribute to the closing of achievement gaps identified by socioeconomic status and race, and potentially lead to increased high school graduation and college enrollment rates.
