7 mar 2011 · As we sailed further towards south, the drift ice becomes larger and thicker. We saw sea eagles resting on the drift ice in the middle of the sea. Our ship breaks the ice grinding them as we sailed along. It was such a wonderful sight, cold wind blowing, fresh air and a wonderful experience to try the ice breaker cruise.
While drift ice (流氷, Ryūhyō) can be observed along the entire Sea of Okhotsk coast from Wakkanai to the Shiretoko Peninsula, it gets thickest around Abashiri. Due to global warming, the amount and thickness of the drift ice has decreased considerably since the late 1980s.
