The 5/8 wave antenna consists of a vertical radiator which is fed at the base of the antenna. A matching device of some sort must be added between the antenna and the feedline if you wish to feed it with coax. Adding a coil in series with the antenna at the base is one such method of matching.

Matching a 5/8λ vertical. The 5/8λ vertical is quite popular, being ascribed some magic pattern properties. Objectively, a change in the pattern distribution occurs for a vertical monopole as its length increases past about 60% of a wavelength.
13 sie 2012 · The center coax conductor is fastened to the long screw which is tapping the coil at the proper spot to get a match (low SWR). You must have radials. If you can not, then neither is a 1/4 wave an option as it needs them, too. The matching network for an end fed half wave is more complex than the 5/8 wave, in my experience.
10 paź 2014 · Just a happy few build a 5/8 wave vertical antenna. This is remarkable, since the 5/8 has the lowest angle of radiation and a little bit more gain (depending on ground conditions). Whenever you have an open field to place an HF vertical, you should consider the 5/8 for DX’ing.
The matching components are a series section of 50Ω line with vf=0.67 of length 143mm, and a 3.2 µH series coil. These are starting points for in-situ adjustment of the real antenna. It is prudent to install an effective current balun on the main feed line near the matching circuit.
28 lis 2023 · 1/4 wave ground plane with sloping radials, 1/2 wave dipole, and 5/8 wave vertical with the tops at the same height over perfect ground. Performance is virtually identical for all three antennas. We’ll look at the results over perfect ground to avoid possible modeling quirks…
