Find viscosity tables and charts for engine oil at multiple temperatures (viscosity and density values with their source).
Multigrade oils must fulfill two viscosity specifications, their viscosity grade consists of two numbers, e.g. 10W-40: 10W refers to the low-temperature viscosity ("Winter"), 40 refers to the high-temperature viscosity ("Summer").
Lube oils can be multigrade or monograde where multigrade oils fulfills two viscosity specifications. Example SAE 10W-40 where 10W refers to low-temperature - or winter - viscosity and 40 refers to the high-temperature - or summer - viscosity.
4 wrz 2024 · Motor oil viscosity is determined by numbers that differ based on engine and climate requirements. Single-grade oils, such as SAE 30 or SAE 40, are available, but multi-grade oils like 5W-30 or 15W-50 offer greater versatility.
14 gru 2023 · Engine oil SAE 10W-40. Mineral based multigrade gasoline engine oil. Property. Value in metric unit. Value in US unit. Density at 60°F (15.6°C) 0.872 *10³. kg/m³.
The number before the “W” signifies the viscosity of an oil at low temperatures – for example before you start your engine. The number following the “W” indicates its viscosity at normal operating temperatures when the engine is running.
Multigrade lubricant containers feature a number on either side of the ‘W’ to denote the oil’s ability to cope with seasonal temperature variations, such as 5W30, 15W40, or 10W40. What do these viscosity grades mean? As with monograde oils, the ‘W’ still means ‘winter’.
