The second work, "Birth of a New World," was a monument designed to be installed in the United States. It was however never built, and, after a few changes to the design –most importantly the replacement of Christopher Columbus’s head by the one of Peter the Great-, the monument was finally erected in Moscow (Russia).
Zurab Konstantinovich Tsereteli (Georgian: ზურაბ კონსტანტინეს ძე წერეთელი, Russian: Зураб Константинович Церетели; born 4 January 1934) is a Georgian-Russian painter, sculptor and architect known for large-scale and at times controversial monuments.
Originally designed by Georgian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli as a monument to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus 's first voyage, Birth of the New World was constructed in 1991.
At the Academy, Tsereteli stood out from his classmates thanks to his natural gift, tireless work ethic and thirst for creativity. The artist’s original style and unique character were formed by his dedication, inner awareness of novelty and his ability to accumulate diverse feelings and ideas.
