The player does have a very nice sound (used to own a 30, many years ago). If you are stuck at the factory reset, you need to setup the web server / HOSTS file trick to get things to work would suggest just going through the steps one by one (ZaffFan80's link to the right).
Batt cable may have come slightly loose. Had a similar thing happen to mine. Use the Zune software to get it back. I had this issue (Stuck on the bootloader screen no progress bar) and I realized that I was a dummy and connected my zif cable backwards on the main board.
I have a Zune 30 that I just got updated and working. I hooked up to my computer, cleared all the old content, unplugged it, and now it's stuck in a boot loop. When it's unplugged it flashes the Zune splash screen, turns off, and repeats.
