Zond 5 (Russian: Зонд 5, lit. 'Probe 5') was a spacecraft of the Soviet Zond program. In September 1968 it became the first spaceship to travel to and circle the Moon in a circumlunar trajectory, the first Moon mission to include animals, and the first to return safely to Earth.
W latach 1967–1970 pod nazwą Zond odbywały się próbne loty w kierunku Księżyca statków kosmicznych typu Sojuz 7K-Ł1. Miały one masę od 5140 do 5390 kg i dokonywały oblotu wokół Księżyca bez wchodzenia na jego orbitę, po czym powracały na Ziemię.

The Zond was essentially a Soyuz spacecraft with the Orbital Module removed to save weight, replaced with a high-gain antenna and navigation instruments to enable lunar missions.

It carried its biological payload around the moon and returned to Earth. The tortoises survived landing in the Indian Ocean and were returned to Moscow.
