Zirconium is a chemical element; it has symbol Zr and atomic number 40. First identified in 1789, isolated in impure form in 1824, and manufactured at scale by 1925, pure zirconium is a lustrous transition metal with a greyish-white color that closely resembles hafnium and, to a lesser extent, titanium.

Mechanical Properties. Zirconium has a Brinell of 650 MPa, Mohs hardness of 5 MPa, and Vickers of 903 MPa. The Shear Modulus of Zr is 33 GPa. The Young Modulus of Element 40 is 68 GPa. The Poisson Ratio of Zirconium (Zr) is 0.34. The Speed of Sound of Zirconium is 3800 m/s. Hardness.
Zirconium is in Group 4 of the Periodic Table and is a metal that prefers oxidation state (IV), as in the oxide, ZrO 2 and the chloride ZrCl 4, but it can exhibit lower oxidation states such as ZrCl 2 and ZrCl 3. Zirconium does not dissolve in alkalis or acids except hydrofluoric acid.
Physical Properties. Zirconium is a refractory metal with a high melting point. Its chief mineral is zircon, ZrSiO 4, which always contains about 1% hafnium – another refractory metal with a high melting point.
