A familial form of YNS has very rarely been described [5, 22 – 24], affecting two siblings [25, 26] or a family with eight cases in four sibships over two generations [22].
19 wrz 2022 · Pulmonary disease, specifically pleural effusion, was added to the diagnostic criteria by Emerson in 1966. In general, the syndrome is acquired and affects adults over age 50. However, there are case reports of YNS occurring in children and even newborns.
YNS is diagnosed based on a triad associating yellow nail discoloration, pulmonary manifestations (chronic cough, bronchiectasia, pleural effusion) and lower limb lymphedema. Chronic sinusitis is frequently associated with the triad.
The most important nail differential diagnoses include chronic paronychia, which shares absence of the cuticle and nail thickening and discoloration, and onychomycosis of the toenails, which produces thickening and onycholysis.
Two of the following criteria must be present: slow-growing discolored nails, lower limb lymphedema, pleuropulmonary symptoms (pleural effusion, recurrent pneumonitis, bronchiectasis, rhinosinusitis). Children with Yellow Nail Syndrome have lung manifestations in more than 75% and lymphedema 56 to 80%. + + +
