The belly is usually yellow with irregularly spaced orange, red, or brown spots or half-moon markings. The number of dark bands and blotches on the back is usually 30 or less. It prefers clear, cool, gravel-bed streams and is the most commonly encountered snake of southern Ozark streams.
The plain-bellied watersnake is a medium-sized, heavy-bodied, dark-colored, semiaquatic snake with a plain yellow belly. It's present in the Bootheel and north along the Mississippi River floodplain, and along our southernmost counties and northward in western Missouri into parts of northwest Missouri.
Be on the lookout for these water snakes near swamps, marshes, ponds, and slow-moving streams and rivers, as well as flooded fields and drainage ditches. But they aren’t limited to just aquatic habitats. Cottonmouths can also be found in palmetto thickets, pine forests, dune areas, and prairies.
