There was an option to either use a profile picture or build an avatar for yourself. I used to chat not too much but in considerable amount. Then I also got my brother to make an account on yahoo chat rooms.

You could play a songs and move next to someone to exchange pics. No one has ever remembered this and I cant find any screen shots. I'd say around 1998 or so you could join a yahoo chat where you could make a little avatar and hang in chat.
