30 lis 2015 · Hello KC4RAF, I've also got a FT-2900R. It actually puts out 5/10/30/75 watts as input into a tuned antenna. Since I live right in the middle of about 10 repeaters, I use an "Ed Fong" duel band 2 meter/70 cm antenna mounted in thin wall pvc up in the attic. The antenna is rated for 75 watts.
6 lis 2011 · I am a yaesu fan. The ft2900 is big and heavy. I used to have one but didn't ever have a time where the extra 20watts on the 2900 out performed the 1900. 99% of signal coverage is all about antenna set up.

This radio's strongest quality is that it feels absolutely indestructible. The heatsink is solid alloy, the buttons and knobs are stiff (in a good way), and the screen is gigantic. If you value the 80 watt rated output, the 2980 would make an excellent base radio.
