To solve a system of two linear equations, we want to find the values of the variables that are solutions to both equations. In other words, we are looking for the ordered pairs (x, y) that make both equations true. These are called the solutions to a system of equations.
Using the graph of \(\ y=x\) and \(\ x+2 y=6\), shown below, determine how many solutions the system has. Then classify the system as consistent or inconsistent and the equations as dependent or independent.
Graphing a Function Using y-intercept and Slope. Another way to graph linear functions is by using specific characteristics of the function rather than plotting points. The first characteristic is its y-intercept, which is the point at which the input value is zero. To find the y-intercept, we can set x = 0 x = 0 in the equation.
