I connect the leads and trickle charge dead battery packs for 5-15 minutes on a 5 volt 1 amp power supply to see if cells are actually bad, or its just dropped below the threshold. Once you're above the threshold (check using a volt meter) you just pop it on your normal charger and let it do its job. Most new chargers test for faulty cells too ...
I have a battery pack for all my Xbox controllers and they last quite a long time on a full charge. Personally, I think the battery pack is much more convenient and worth purchasing. Sorry, I don't know anything about buying them online though.
