I have a AA charger that is way better than the XBOX recharger and can drain and restore these AA batteries fine. Another trick I've found is that sometimes rechargeable batteries drain too low for the chargers to detect them and start charging.
Just recently, as in the past 2-3 weeks, my Xbox 360 controllers (both of them) have started going through batteries very quickly. I've gone through 8 AA batteries since it started. They last about 2-3 days with only about 4 hours of play time.
I wrapped the middle of the batteries in a layer of tape just thick enough to fill the gaps in the battery slots. This solves the problem by stopping the batteries from shaking in the pack whenever the controller is moved, thus stopping the pack from moving and disconnecting the controller.
The controller I bought most recently has this weird issue where it will drain batteries when it's off if I leave a pack in the back of it. My 3 other controllers will last weeks even if I "turn them off" by just letting them time out.
