I've used rechargeable AAs since the 360, but decided to go with a charging pack this time. It's pretty nice just plugging in the controller when you need to charge it. If it runs low, I can just plug it in and keep playing. No need to stop and swap batteries.
I ended up buying a Duracell charger with 4 rechargeable batteries. Going on 3 years now and they still work great. They are fully charged in 10-15 minutes and last for weeks.
Once you're above the threshold (check using a volt meter) you just pop it on your normal charger and let it do its job. Most new chargers test for faulty cells too, so once you're over the threshold you can see whether the battery is indeed beyond repair.
