23 maj 2014 · During the war, Eldred was the site of a large munitions factory that operated from 1941 until mid-1945 and employed over 1,500 people, most of whom were women. The museum, that has been open since 1996, tells the story of not just the local involvement in the war, but the entire war itself.

NATIONAL MUNITIONS COMPANY. “Why is there a World War II museum in Eldred?” This is a common question received by staff at the Eldred WWII Museum. The answer lies in a munitions plant that was operated in the Eldred area during the war. The plant did not start out as an American operation, however.
This museum features spectacular exhibits, award-winning video, and a large research library. Highlights include a M255 tank, a working submarine periscope, and tank-mountain where visitors can operate radio controlled tanks and compete to conquer the fortifications.
