Recount is a graphical damage meter written by Cryect. Recount (Preservation) is an attempt to preserve it through the 2.4 patch and fix up some minor things along the way. If Cryect returns the project really should be wholely his and he can keep or abandon any changes I've made here.

Still, if you want the absolute best with the most features and the most efficient damage meter, Details! is the way to go. Besides, Skada hasn't been updated since 9.0.2. I used to use Recount a long, long time ago.
10 mar 2021 · Details! is the most accurate damage meter. It uses the same algorithms as warcraftlogs, as well, so it tends to be the most accurate of the three main players. Honestly Details! has been the recommended damage meter by the top players since at least 2008.

Putting some numbers to it: If there is a 1 minute fight but you died 45 seconds in and you do 1.2M damage, on Details this will show as 20K DPS, on Recount it will be 26,667 DPS. These are the default settings for the meters, I think you can change them.
Since there is no "golden standard" on how to count DPS the only way to have comparable results is to use the same meter. But all meters should show the same overall damage.
