Development of the timeline. The original campaign setting of Greyhawk was a home campaign world invented by Gary Gygax in 1972 while playtesting the game that would become Dungeons & Dragons. In the beginning, the entire "world" consisted of a single dungeon underneath an abandoned castle.
To this geography, Gygax then added a background history. Knowing that his new world would need conflict, Gygax set out to create a fractious place where chaos and evil were in the ascendant and courageous champions would be needed. In order to explain how his world had arrived at this state, he wrote an outline of a thousand years of history.
