What share of adults are obese? Obesity varies widely worldwide and has become more common. In the chart here, we see the share of adults (aged 18 years and older) who are obese across regions. These estimates are based on survey data and statistical modeling by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Worldwide adult obesity has more than doubled since 1990, and adolescent obesity has quadrupled. In 2022, 2.5 billion adults (18 years and older) were overweight. Of these, 890 million were living with obesity.

10 cze 2024 · In 2020, it was estimated that around 42 percent of the world's population aged 20 years and older were overweight or obese. By the year 2035, this figure is expected to reach 46 percent.
29 lut 2024 · Obesity prevalence was higher than underweight with posterior probability of at least 0·80 in 177 countries (89%) for women and 145 (73%) for men in 2022, whereas the converse was true in 16 countries (8%) for women, and 39 (20%) for men.
This Atlas was published on World Obesity Day and supports the campaign. It is written in the hope that it will inform fruitful ongoing discussions about obesity around the globe.
