Tips & messages for parents: Model gender-equitable behaviour and roles at home that positively challenge gender stereotypes, e.g. doing activities traditionally connected to the opposite gender like fathers cooking in the kitchen and sharing caregiving and household responsibilities.
“A process that influences and teaches an individual how to behave as a man or a woman, based on culturally defined gender roles. Parents [and caregivers], teachers, peers, media, and faith traditions are some of the many agents of gender socialization.
Avoid gendered stereotypes as descriptive terms. Avoid using words which imply a gender connotation to describe an aspect of a person or object. It is especially important to avoid doing this where the gendered term is used as an insult. These expressions normally paint the feminine as the negative.
Several strategies can be adopted to promote gender equality through language in a document, while writing in a clear and fluid way to retain the document’s communicative goals: A) Use gender-neutral expressions. B) Use inclusive language. C) Use both feminine and masculine forms.
