January and February. It’s time to prepare your roses for the year ahead and give them a prune. Ideally, complete this task in January or February, but if you haven’t done so by March, don’t worry; your roses will still benefit from a thorough prune. Roses planted in windy or exposed conditions.

Prune laterals flush, or to 4-5 bud eyes. Prune most Old/ heirloom roses to shape only. Prune once-blooming roses after Spring flowering or you will reduce bloom. Strip all old leaves, clean up and use city compost. Prune bush roses to retain three to six main canes, cutting away the oldest and weakest canes first, flush with bud union.
Winter rose pruning should be done in December or January and be completed before February 14. If winter rose pruning is done too early in the Fall, it stimulates new growth in the still warm days and this tender growth can be damaged by a frost in December.
