Go to Device Manager and expand the hard drive controllers. If you see "AHCI" in there, you are using AHCI. The good news is that you can switch from IDE mode to AHCI in Windows 7 or Vista without reinstalling or even opening your PC case. Here's the MSFT KB article on how to do so.

Many SATA controllers offer selectable modes of operation: legacy Parallel ATA emulation (more commonly called IDE Mode), standard AHCI mode (also known as Native Mode), or vendor-specific RAID (which generally enables AHCI in order to take advantage of its capabilities).
6 wrz 2019 · Do i NEED to switch storage mode in BIOS from RAID to AHCI to install Ubuntu? Yes. Unless you can find a RAID driver for your hardware that supports Linux(/Ubuntu).
15 cze 2022 · Reboot, choose your custom menuentry, enjoy Debian with SSD in AHCI mode (see attachment #1 on my Google Drive). With Windows is another story, the previous magic string does not suffice alone and indeed, it prevents the system from seeing the SSD disk - so it does not boot.
Microsoft Windows XP wymaga dodatkowego sterownika, podanego na przykład z osobnej dyskietki, podczas instalacji systemu przy włączonym AHCI. Niepoprawny sterownik lub jego brak może zakończyć się błędem „0x7B BSOD STOP error”.
AHCI mode and IDE mode -- what is it? IDE mode is to give you the greatest compatibility with older operating systems. While AHCI is as I mentioned above, modern version of the IDE -- use AHCI mode if you are running recent operating systems (Windows Vista+ and Linux kernel from 2.6.19+).
Change in BIOS (in my case, under "Integrated peripherals" -> "SATA RAID/AHCI Mode") from IDE mode to AHCI. This can vary depending on your system and BIOS, and maybe you even need to select RAID if no AHCI option is available.
