Recently I decided to refurbish my old Acer Aspire G3600 Desktop Gaming PC (from 2012) to play retro games, namely titles such as Battle for Middle-Earth on DVD-ROM. My question is - with the specs listed below - should I install Windows XP, Vista or 7 for optimal ease of use?
15 paź 2006 · Using a very capable system scoring a 5.3 on Windows Experience Base tests, TheINQ ran a lot of games, and found that almost all games run up to 40 frames per second slower on Vista then on XP. Serious Sam 2 was the only exception, having a consistently higher frame rate by up to 10 frames per second.
There's no reason for it to be Vista. Anyway, you might find this video helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCzwTz2GRZ4. He uses different hardware, but my recommendation would be: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 ($10 on eBay) 4GB (2x2GB) of DDR2 RAM. Compatible LGA 775 motherboard.

Windows 7 VGA performance is as good as Windows Vista with the obviously occasional random fluctuation in performance here and there though. Looking at the opposite side, Windows 7 won't offer performance increases in graphics performance either with an exception here and there.
