William Wordsworth, (born April 7, 1770, Cockermouth, Cumberland, Eng.—died April 23, 1850, Rydal Mount, Westmorland), English poet. Orphaned at age 13, Wordsworth attended Cambridge University, but he remained rootless and virtually penniless until 1795, when a legacy made possible a reunion with his sister Dorothy Wordsworth.
