USS Wichita was a unique heavy cruiser of the United States Navy built in the 1930s. The last American cruiser designed to meet the limits of the London Naval Treaty, she was originally intended to be a New Orleans -class heavy cruiser, accordingly with the maximum main armament of three triple 8-inch (203 mm) gun turrets.

19 lip 2020 · General characteristics. Wichita was 600 feet (182.9 m) long at the waterline and 608 ft 4 in (185.42 m) overall, versus 185 m or (606 feet) for the Brooklyn, 61 ft 9 in (18.82 m) in beam versus (19 m (62 feets)), and 23 ft 9 in (7.24 m) draught versus 7 m (23 feet), on the Brooklyn.

Wichita. joined CruDiv 7 in the Atlantic Squadron after completing work-up, and then participated in the Neutrality Patrol in the Caribbean, but in June 1940 she made a goodwill cruise to South America that lasted until September. Her service in the Atlantic theatre was relatively uneventful.
According to decisions of 1930 London Naval conference, the USA could lay down one heavy cruiser in 1934 (СА44 Vincennes of New Orleans class) and one more in 1935. In March, 1934 it was decided to build latter ship under the new design, on basis of Brooklyn with replacement of 152mm guns by 203mm.
