The association between Hermes and the underworld is related to his function as a god of boundaries (the boundary between life and death), but he is considered a psychopomp, a deity who helps guide souls of the deceased to the afterlife, and his image was commonly depicted on gravestones in classical Greece.

Dreams of omen were messages sent by the gods and the ghosts of the dead. Hermes presided over these, both in his role as the Herald of the Gods (the agent of all divine messages), the God of Sleep, and as Guide of the Dead, who traversed the paths between the lands of the living and the dead.
Greek sources. The first descriptions of the myth of Hermes date back to the archaic period of Greek culture. One of the most important is found in the Homeric Hymn to Hermes, an anonymous creation from the 7th or 6th century B.C. that deals with his birth and early exploits.
