Yes, many psychology/social science students will use SPSS and cannot handle programming. They need the GUI. If you personally want to progress, then there is no need to use only SPSS.
My guess is that it's because it's true that there are many students who hate using SPSS, but in my opinion those students are usually the ones who simply refuse to give it an earnest shot. They just hate math and all things quantitative.

spss is common still in many disciplines, especially in the social sciences, which op said they are in. if they wanna learn R and use it, sure, and i agree the advisor forcing a particular program is bad advising, but claiming spss is entirely "old school" is just inaccurate.
