I don't know enough about either to know which is best for a complete beginner. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. If it helps inform your response, here are some points about what I'd like to achieve long-term: I'm very much interested in using the medium for storytelling, so my game would likely be dialogue heavy.

I managed to find a download of Game Maker 7 lite, which actually works fine. However I need the pro version but can't find it anywhere, and it looks like it's impossible to upgrade the lite version since 7 pro is no longer sold.
I'd suggest trying it first. Game maker is pretty good for entry level programmers thanks to its drag and drop and supportive community. But even then, programming is not easy. As long as you're motivated and eager to learn, you'll be able to make what you want in game maker.
Quest lets you make interactive story games. Text adventure games like Zork and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Gamebooks like the Choose Your Own Adventure and Fighting Fantasy books. You don't need to know how to program. All you need is a story to tell. Your game can be played anywhere.
13 cze 2016 · I will try and find Game Maker 7(because the download doesn't work anymore) and 8(YouTube is easy to find 7 and 8), YoYoGames seems to not support GM8 and HTML5 anymore, as they currently support Game Maker Studio.
