What did shiplap used to be called? Before being more commonly referred to as “shiplap,” these boards were often called “rabbeted siding” or simply “lap siding.” This is due to the rabbet joint created by cutting a groove into each board’s edge, allowing them to overlap and form a weatherproof seal.
In interior design, shiplap is a style of wooden wall siding characterized by long planks, normally painted white, that are mounted horizontally with a slight gap between them in a manner that evokes exterior shiplap walls. A disadvantage of the style is that the gaps are prone to accumulating dust.
Technically, shiplap consists of boards that overlap at rabbeted edges to create a snug, watertight fit. It became a common exterior siding material for barns and sheds. Shiplap traveled from sea to home, but didn't start as a decorative element. Eventually, shiplap found its way indoors, but not as a decorative element.
