14 mar 2023 · Though Petty was content to play most of the record without Lynch, his label insisted on having a greatest-hits record led to the original Heartbreakers reuniting for the song ‘Mary Jane’s Last Dance’, which turned into one of their biggest hits.
Lynch left the group in 1994. His last gig with the Heartbreakers was on October 2, 1994, at the Bridge School Benefit Concert in Mountain View, California. It was immediately following this gig that Lynch left the band due to musical and personal differences with Petty.

Even though Ferrone would continue to play drums with the Heartbreakers, the boyhood friendship which brought them together had finally come to an end.
Tom secretly did replace him early on, but the band just didn't sound the same. There may be better drummers out there, but Stan made the Heartbreakers sound the way they do and Tom was smart enough to know that.
Stan Lynch had moved to Florida, but was persuaded to return for his last session with the band. In 1994, Lynch left the band. Drummer Dave Grohl, formerly of the band Nirvana, sat in on a number of performances, but declined to join the band, instead choosing to pursue his own solo work which eventually grew into the band Foo Fighters.
