Germany spent the entirety of the Cold War era divided into the NATO-aligned West Germany and Warsaw Pact-aligned East Germany. Germans also fled from Communist areas into West Germany, which experienced rapid economic expansion, and became the dominant economy in Western Europe.
1455 - Johannes Gutenberg first prints the Gutenberg Bible. His printing press will change the history of Europe. 1517 - Martin Luther publishes his 95 Thesis which marks the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. 1524 - German peasants revolt against the aristocracy. 1618 - The Thirty Years' War begins. It is fought largely in Germany.

Johannes Gutenberg (um 1400–1468), the inventor of letter press printing with moveable type, was the first to print the Bible in Mainz in a print run of roughly 180 copies. Previously, all manuscripts had to be written by hand, which meant that they were very expensive and accessible to only few people.
