18 wrz 2024 · Oxygen was discovered about 1772 by a Swedish chemist, Carl Wilhelm Scheele, who obtained it by heating potassium nitrate, mercuric oxide, and many other substances.
Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) — Unitarian minister, teacher, author, and natural philosopher — was the Earl of Shelburne's librarian and tutor to his sons. In this room, then a working laboratory, Priestley pursued his investigations of gases. On 1 August 1774 he discovered oxygen.
Oxygen is a chemical element with the symbol O and atomic number 8. It is a member of the chalcogen group in the periodic table, a highly reactive nonmetal, and a potent oxidizing agent that readily forms oxides with most elements as well as with other compounds.
The French chemist Antoine Lavoisier later claimed to have discovered the gas independently of Priestley. He named it oxygen (meaning ‘acid maker’), and investigated its properties. However, it’s known that Priestley had already shown Lavoisier how to make oxygen, undermining his claim.
Oxygen was discovered in 1774 by Joseph Priestley in England and two years earlier, but unpublished, by Carl W. Scheele in Sweden. Scheele heated several compounds including potassium nitrate, manganese oxide, and mercury oxide and found they released a gas which enhanced combustion.
In 1774, Carl Wilhelm Scheele and Joseph Priestley independently discovered oxygen, and named it “fire air” and “dephlogisticated air”, respectively due to its role in combustion. The name oxygen originates from combination of two words, oxys and genes , that are Greek word for “acid forming”.
